Sultan City Council meetings are not just about crafting ordinances, examining land use issues and making financial decisions. They are also about celebrating the Sultan community and those who are helping to make it a better place for our visitors, residents, families and students.
Every month, Mayor Eslick selects recipients to be recognized in the city’s spotlight program. Our Volunteer Spotlight seeks to recognize outstanding community volunteers, while our Business Spotlight highlights a local business. Our newest spotlight is our Education Spotlight, which honors students and teachers making a positive difference in our schools. Spotlights are frequently given to individuals, but can also be awarded to pairs or groups.
Spotlight recipients are interviewed by city staff for a spotlight profile that gets included in Sultan City Council documentation. Typically presented at 7 p.m. during the second council meeting of the month, city staff introduces the spotlights by giving a brief overview of their accomplishments. The spotlight recipient is then given a certificate of appreciation signed by the mayor and has their photograph taken.
Each spotlight recipient is welcome to address the council if they wish, and is invited to shake hands with each councilmember.
This month, our Volunteer Spotlight goes to Dave and Christina Sivewright, our Business Spotlight is being presented to Hoot Owl Mini Mart owner Paul Thind, and our Education Spotlight is being given to Sultan High School biology teacher Ryan Monger.
The September spotlights will be recognized at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, in council chambers at Sultan City Hall. The public is always invited to attend council meetings.
The October spotlights will be presented earlier than normal to accommodate city business, and will take place Thursday, Oct. 12.
The city is suspending the spotlight program for the months of November and December, with the program resuming in January of 2018. The city welcomes suggestions on who it should showcase in future spotlights. Please send your suggestions for Business, Volunteer and Education spotlights to Chris Hendrickson at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
