Responsibilities

The Building Division provides permitting, plan review and inspection services to ensure buildings are safe for the citizens of Sultan.

The Building Department reviews, issue and inspects building, mechanical, plumbing, sign and demolition permits. All plans and inspection requests must be submitted to the city for processing through the MyGov portal.

Building Code Update

At its January 14, 2021, Council Meeting, the City of Sultan has adopted the 2018 International Building Codes (after publication the effective date is January 25, 2021), or as required by state mandate which is February 1, 2021. 

The 2018 Building Code Effective date is February 1, 2021.

Design Criteria:

  • Seismic Zone: D/D2
  • Wind Speed: 110 mph (based on 3 second gust wind velocities)
  • Exposure: B, C, or D (Design professional to determine by site visit)
  • Soil bearing Capacity: 1,500psf assumed
  • Frost Line Depth: 18-inches
  • Roof Snow Load: Minimum 25psf (may increase depending on site location)
  • Energy Code Design Temperature: 20F
  • Weathering – Moderate
  • Termite – Moderate
  • Winter Design Temperature – 26-F
  • City Zoning Map 12.2022

The National Electrical Code is adopted and amended by the Department of Labor and Industries. Please see their code site at http://www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Electrical        

2021 Building Codes are scheduled to be adopted in mid-2023.

Building Application Reviews

Building application reviews are accepted by appointment only. Please call Cyd Donk at 360-793-1099 or email Cyd to schedule an appointment to review your building permit application. Appointments can be scheduled Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. All building permit applications are submitted on-line through the MyGov Permit portal found here My Gov Permitting. We no longer accept paper submittals for building permits.

Schedule a Building Inspection

Please submit your inspection request through your online permit portal MyGov.  Phone requests are no longer accepted. Building inspections will be performed Monday through Thursdays. There are no inspections on Friday, weekends or federal holidays. Building inspection requests must be made by 3:00 pm the day before the inspection is requested. Inspections requested over the weekend will be scheduled for the following Tuesday. If for any reason you are not ready for inspection after a request has been made, you must call 360.793.1099 or 360.793.1153 to cancel the inspection to avoid a missed inspection fee. Due to the workload of our inspectors, we cannot always schedule inspections for a specific time of day.  Staff will make every effort to work with you.

Who do I contact for Civil Inspections

For civil (grading or utility) inspections, please submit your request through your online permit at MyGov portal.

Inspections must be requested through the online form at least 24-hours before the inspection is needed. Phone requests will no longer be accepted. If for any reason you are not ready for inspection after a request has been made, you must call 360.913.5136 to cancel the inspection.
