City Council Position 5
Application for Council Vacancy
The Sultan city council is accepting applications and letters of interest for a council vacancy created by the resignation of Jim Flower on May 27, 2010. Applications for appointment to city council Position #5 will be available on Monday, June 14, 2010 at city Hall, 319 Main Street, Suite 200 Sultan WA, 98294 on the city’s website at www.ci.sultan.wa.us, or by calling 360-793-2231. Completed applications must be submitted to the city clerk no later than 4:00pm on Friday, June 25, 2010.
All applicants must complete an application and submit a letter of interest to be considered for a vacant position. Interviews with interested applicants are tentatively scheduled for the city council meeting on Thursday, July 8, 2010. If a selection is made, the appointment to office would be effective at the next regular meeting on Thursday, July 22, 2010.
An eligible applicant must be a registered voter in Sultan at the time of application and have resided within the Sultan city limits for at least one year. The replacement will serve until the position is filled by election in November 2011.
The city council meets regularly on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. City councilmembers often have committee meetings and other time obligations in addition to the city council meetings. The council is currently meeting on the first and third Thursdays of the month to review and recommend changes to the city’s comprehensive plan. Sultan council members typically spend 10-15 hours weekly fulfilling the duties of office.

The Public Works Director organizes, administers, and supervises all of the activities of the City of Sultan public works department including water and sewer systems, street maintenance and repair, surface water management, capital planning and construction, solid waste collection, facility construction, maintenance and repair, fleet management, cemetery management, parks and traffic control functions, emergency management, and equipment and public works contracts.
The Public Works Director also oversees the review of all permits and licenses for drainage, paving, site improvements, sanitary sewer and water service and public improvements for land subdivisions.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
Experience
Four years of increasing responsibility as a civil engineer for a city, county, state or engineering consultant and two years supervisory experience.
License or Certificate
Certified as a professional engineer licensed to practice in Washington State.
Possession or the ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Washington State Driver’s license.
