Join the group of Growing Sultan Volunteers

Whether you want to keep the City clean, do office work, talk on the telephone, help people one–on-one, there’s a place for you to volunteer in Sultan.

Approximately 150 – 250 hours are donated by volunteers each month to their community. Take a look at our 2010 Volunteer Report for detailed information on volunteer hours worked and more detailed information on some of the many volunteer programs in the City.

Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteers Charlie Preston and Ted Jackson were recognized at the May City Council Meeting for their outstanding volunteerism working with the citizens, business owners and the State of Washington to reopen Reiter Recreational Trails.

Eighteen months ago, Ted Jackson recognized the devastating economic consequences of the Department of Natural Resources’ closure of Reiter Trails, east of Gold Bar. Businesses from Monroe to Skykomish felt the impact of losing customers in restaurants, overnight accommodations, grocery, gas and convenience stores. As a non-profit business operator at Gold Bar Nature Trails, Ted commented, “Many of our out-of-town residents bought lots in Gold Bar Nature Trails because of the close proximity to Reiter Recreational Trails.” Gold Bar Nature Trails is still in business, but unfortunately, some of the other retail businesses closed their doors due to the trail closure.

Conveniently unemployed at the time, Ted volunteered himself as a contact for the reopening of Reiter Trails. Thinking the project would fill his time, Ted had no idea that it would take over his life.

In 18 months, Ted and his colleagues (also volunteers), Charlie Preston, Gold Bar Mayor, Joe Beavers and Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Director, Debbie Copple have managed to achieve the “perceived” impossible.

Ted worked the political system diligently, writing letters to State Legislators and Representatives, supporting petitions, and convincing others to do the same. Ted made countless trips to Olympia to lobby every elected official he could about reopening Reiter Trails.

Ted and his associate’s advocacy has helped to put Reiter ORV Trails on the Governor’s Office and State Legislator’s radar holding them accountable for its funding.

Ted worked with the Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce to coordinate the Sky Valley Recreation and Planning Partners with members from Snohomish to Skykomish, Snohomish County Parks and Recreation, including the United States Forest Service. The partners meet regularly to discuss the progress each agency is making on bringing recreational opportunities to East Snohomish County.

Ted envisions East Snohomish County as an “Outdoor Recreation Playground” and is working with the State of Washington Department of Commerce, Snohomish County Parks and Recreation, Chambers of Commerce from Snohomish to Skykomish and the Cities of Sultan, Gold Bar and Skykomish to create an “Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Cluster” in East Snohomish County. Approval and implementation of an “innovative Partnership Zone” will inevitably draw tourists to the entire area.
